CNDP rebel leader General Laurent Nkunda, Congo's main rebel leader listens to radio in the former adminisitrator house in Rutshuru, North Kivu, DRC, Nov. 19, 2008.An estimated 150 people have been killed in the town of Kiwanja on the 4th and 5th of November, 2008 - the worst killing spree in North Kivu province in two years.
Although UN peacekeepers considered Kiwanja a priority protection zone, they did not have enough peacekeepers or the capacity to stop the killings. Most of those killed were summarily executed by forces of rebel commander Laurent Nkunda National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP). Others died during combat between Nkunda forces and the Mai Mai militia. Mai Mai militia also deliberately killed people.
